Description

Welcome to the capital of the Alcarria region. Visit the Infantado palace and gardens, housing the municipal museum and archive of Guadalajara. It is located in the Plaza de España and was built in the late 15th century in Elizabethan Gothic style with Renaissance elements. The visit lasts around two hours; a visit to the museum may also be arranged.

Walk up to the Alvar Fáñez tower, a National Monument since 1921 and renovated in 1928. It is a defensive tower on the wall that used to surround the city. Wander about the old streets of the city and you will come across the apse of San Gil, the only element remaining from an old church that used to exist in the current town hall square.

In the Plaza de Santa María, you will find the co-cathedral of Santa María de la Fuente la Mayor, so called because there is a fountain of fresh water in front of it. It was built at the end of the 13th century or the beginning of the 14th century; it is Mudéjar in style and built with brick and masonry, plus some details in green ceramics, its most commonly used materials. The temple is surrounded to the north and east by a stylised gallery from the early 1500s in a style known as Alcarreño Renaissance.

Conclude your visit at the Cotilla palace, currently a municipal art centre.
