Description

San Lorenzo de El Escorial has great and beautiful examples of architecture that were declared World Heritage in 1984. The main ones are the Monastery and the Casita del Infante, but we can also see the Monastery of Prestado, La Granjilla de La Fresneda, the House-fort of El Campillo and the Casita del Príncipe.

It is well worth visiting the interior of the Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo, a complex that includes a basilica, a library, a school, a monastery, a royal palace and a pantheon. It was conceived by the king Felipe II, in the second half of the sixteenth century, as a sanctuary of his father’s mortal remains, the king Charles V, and the royal family. For its custody he set up a community of Jeronimo’s monks. Whilst the building was being built new objectives appeared, such as being a royal residence, centre of culture, seminar of studies, workshops of trades, hospice, hospital…

If you want you can go to the known as Felipe II’s Chair, the set is made up of different platforms and seats, sculpted on top of a granite Canchal (known as Canto Gordo) and grouped in three large units. At its feet lies the blacksmith’s forest, composed mostly of melodies or rebollos, although there are also other species of tree such as Montpellier’s maple, chestnut, wild cherry and linden. A specimen of Montpellier maple, located in the very enclosure of Felipe II’s Chair, is listed as a Singular Tree by the Community of Madrid. It has a heigh of more than 10 meters.

If you wish to visit any of these buildings or have a local guide, please let us know and we will manage it.
